Tschussi is an emotional piece for me. I'd dropped off one of my most cherished humans in Switzerland for a chapter of life, and shortly after we parted, I received a message telling me that the Swiss sometimes farewell their loved ones with the word “tschussi”. To me this says so much. It's reserved for those you love, are saying goodbye to, and yet casual, as if to immediately imply that you will see each other again. It's innocently bittersweet, and for me, this song captures all of that love and longing, yet confidence and reassurance. I also had a ridiculous amount of fun making the lead synth. It's a warped foley recording of a naturally tonal, dried kauri branch. A tree native to our home country, Aotearoa, symbolising strength, mana and longevity.
Tryphena is named after a bay in one of the outer islands of the archipelago we live in. Throughout my childhood, we would explore these islands by water, so my memories here are mostly of feeling the swells roll under us, the light reflecting off the water, and adoring the lush pohutukawa trees lining the coast. I made the track at home in the studio, but the feeling of this track reminded me so much of those peaceful moments surrounded by water and light, it felt fitting to name the track after the bay.
9'6” was inspired by a glassy calm day surfing baby waves - one of the boards being 9'6”.
Elo is the gently elating energy of days in the sun and the sea. A love letter to some of my favourite people and the moments shared on the water.
The whole EP is Released on Delicieuse Musique's label, egoplanet - a collection of artists I've listened to for years, which feels like a full circle moment.
